For the Catholics of New Mexico this is a very holy place. It is on the register of National Historic Places and claims more than 300,000 visitors a year, many of them making pilgrimage. Just inside the church is a small room called el pocito (the little well) which contains a round pit, the source of "holy dirt" (tierra bendita) that is believed to have healing powers. Outside, however, is this niche to honor the Guadalupe with many candles and crosses and other offerings of hope as well as gratitude.
